Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a small nation of approximately 7 million people that is found bordering with Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. A look at current statistics show us that Bulgaria is experiencing negative population growth as many move to other counties seeking better employment. Approximately 50% of the population lives below the poverty level and unemployment is 11.4% (although some say it is much higher) and average per capita income is $1,170.  Essential economic reform was begun in 1997.  Bulgaria is seeking EU membership in 2007. Major reforms have been made in preparation for membership both in the Bulgarian infrastructure and political policies (including changes in religious laws). One of the biggest hindrances to final acceptance into the EU is corruption. Bulgaria is considered to be primarily Greek Orthodox in its religious practices. Evangelicals (including Pentecostal/Charismatics) are 3.8% of the population.

MTEE began working with a group of Pastors to establish a network of Bible schools in Bulgaria in 1995. This work continues today with two forms of training in over 20 schools. Many of our graduates are today in full-time ministry or serve as leaders in their local churches. For the last two years we have also hosted courses under the “School of the 70” program which is practically oriented. Under the leadership of MTEE’s Children’s Ministry program Bulgarian children’s workers have been trained and have developed their own curriculum for use in teaching Sunday school or Children’s church. We also have a quarterly newsletter that is sent to Pastors, Sunday school teachers, and parents to encourage them in their work with children and to offer them relevant resources. Mentoring for pastors is also a major concern for us in Bulgaria. Each year working with experienced western pastors we conduct conferences just for pastors and their wives.

Please pray for complete religious freedom for the church in Bulgaria and that Jesus will be lifted up and draw many unto Himself. Pray for our network of Bible schools and students and for the continued expansion of Bible training and our Children’s ministry work. Please also pray for our missionary Meloni Adams as she labors in this nation.
